JAW JOINT PAIN (TMD)
Temporomandibular joint (TMD, lower jaw joint) is a dynamic living tissue which connects the lower jaw to the skull. Jaw joint disorder is the syndrome that holds the pain in masticatory muscles and the dysfunction. Jaw joint disorders have affected majority of people today. It is caused by adjustment disorder between the joint surface and the disc.
Symptoms include:
Feeling pain during while opening and closing mouth
Restricted mouth opening or getting blocked
Neck pain or stiffness
Headache (should not be confused with migraine headache)
Severe pain during chewing and on the face
Perceived pain while closing teeth on each other
Quick feeling of tiredness in the jaw while chewing
Having difficulty to open the mouth generally in the morning and pain
Difficulty in Stretching (Yawning)
Ear pain or ringing in the ears, roaring-like sounds, the feeling of congestion and pressure
Sudden changes in the form of combination of upper and lower teeth
Asymmetry in the face due to hyperplasia of the facial muscles
The deviation in the jaw during mouth opening (sliding)
Causes Include:
Direct trauma to the jaw or to the joints (a result of accident or impulse)
Unilateral chewing habit
Missing teeth
Teeth clenching and grinding
Stress, depression etc
Non-physiological tooth closing
Developmental defects of the joint (hypoplasia etc.)
Degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis, arthrosis
Autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus
Orthodontic disorders
